Ethanol Keeps Gasoline Prices $1.09 Cheaper

The Center for Agricultural and Rural Development (CARD) released on May 15 a study by economists at the University of Wisconsin and Iowa State University examining the impact  of increased ethanol consumption on wholesale gasoline prices. The study, authored by Professors Dermot Hayes and Xiaodong Du, is an update to a 2009 peer-reviewed paper published in the journal Energy Policy.

Key conclusions derived from the report include:
  • In 2011, ethanol reduced wholesale gasoline prices by an average of $1.09 per gallon.
  • Regular grade gasoline prices averaged $3.52 per gallon in 2011, but would have been closer to $4.60 per gallon without the inclusion of more than 13 billion gallons of lower-priced ethanol.
  • The average American household consumed 1,124 gallons of gasoline in 2011, meaning ethanol reduced average household spending at the pump by more than $1,200.
  • Since 2000, ethanol has kept gasoline prices an average of $0.29 per gallon cheaper than they otherwise would have been.
  • Based on the $0.29-per-gallon average annual savings, ethanol has helped save American drivers and the economy more than $477 billion in gasoline expenditures since 2000 – an average of $39.8 billion a year.

I Got You Ethanol

The Iowa Renewable Fuels Association (IRFA) recently held a video contest,“Fuel the Future”, that challenged Iowa high school students to create the best video highlighting the importance and benefits of renewable fuels—such as ethanol and biodiesel—to local communities, Iowa and the nation. The winner was Sam Ennis of Ames, Iowa.

The Iowa Renewable Fuels Association (IRFA) brings together Iowa ethanol and biodiesel producers to foster the development and growth of the state’s renewable fuels industry through education, promotion and infrastructure development. IRFA is committed to making Iowa a leader in producing renewable fuels and value-added co-products.

EPA to Allow 15 Percent Renewable Fuel in Gasoline

Environmental Protection Agency
Earlier this month, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that it had approved the first application for registration of ethanol for use in making gasoline that contains up to 15% ethanol --- known as E15.

"For over 30 years ethanol has been blended into gasoline, but the law limited it to 10 percent by volume for use in gasoline-fueled vehicles. Registration of ethanol to make E15 is a significant step toward its production, sale, and use in model year 2001 and newer gasoline-fueled cars and light trucks.

To enable widespread use of E15, the Obama Administration has set a goal to help fueling station owners install 10,000 blender pumps over the next 5 years. In addition, both through the Recovery Act and the 2008 Farm Bill, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and U.S. Department of Agriculture have provided grants, loans and loan guarantees to spur American ingenuity on the next generation of biofuels.
Today’s action follows an extensive technical review required by law. Registration is a prerequisite to introducing E15 into the marketplace. Before it can be sold, manufactures must first take additional measures to help ensure retail stations and other gasoline distributors understand and implement labeling rules and other E15-related requirements. EPA is not requiring the use or sale of E15.
Ethanol is considered a renewable fuel because it is generally produced from plant products or wastes and not from fossil fuels. Ethanol is blended with gasoline for use in most areas across the country. After extensive vehicle testing by DOE and other organizations, EPA issued two partial waivers raising the allowable ethanol volume to 15 percent for use in model year 2001 and newer cars and light trucks.
E15 is not permitted for use in motor vehicles built prior to 2001 model year and in off-road vehicles and equipment such as boats and lawn and garden equipment. Gas pumps dispensing E15 will be clearly labeled so consumers can make the right choice."

More Corn for Food, Not Ethanol

UPDATE 5/30/2015 - The URL for the report has changed and now correctly links to the PDF.

-----

A common mistake critics make concerning ethanol is their claim that more corn is used for ethanol than for animal or human food use.

And indeed, looking at raw numbers would show that ethanol consumes more.

But the figures don't tell the full story.

And ethanol critics know better.

More than a third of the corn that's used in the ethanol process is returned as animal feed.

Dried Distillers Grains are an important co-product of the ethanol process.

Beef, pork, and poultry producers here in the US and around the world use DDGs as nutritious animal feed.

But can that be proven?

A new report from the USDA's Economic Research Service concludes that nearly 40 percent of the corn used for ethanol goes directly back into the feed supply as a high-protein animal feed.

The feed from ethanol production saves money for animal producers because it averages 80 percent cheaper than corn and can displace a greater amount of corn because of its nutritional value.

One Million NASCAR Miles on E15 American Ethanol

NASCAR announced this week that it has accumulated more than one million miles of driving this season in the Sprint Cup, Nationwide and Camping World Truck series using Sunoco Green E15 as fuel.

According to NASCAR:
The release of the report is particularly timely because this week, the Environmental Protection Agency, and environmental officials and Americans nationwide are celebrating National Pollution Prevention Week. According to the EPA, pollution prevention is the cornerstone of sustainability.
"Before NASCAR switched its fuel to Sunoco Green E15 at the start of the 2011 racing season, there was extensive analysis and deep consideration about the decision," said Mike Lynch, managing director of Green Innovation for NASCAR. "Successfully transitioning to the new fuel and surpassing a million miles, all on America's toughest proving ground, is a validation of Sunoco Green E15 as a high-performance racing fuel and is part of our overall effort to go green.
NASCAR is proud to use this American-made product because it creates American jobs while also reducing harmful emissions."

NASCAR's switch to the new fuel was borne out of a partnership with American Ethanol. Representing a wide array of ethanol supporters, from farmers to bio-engineering firms, American Ethanol was established by Growth Energy in partnership with the National Corn Growers Association and others.
