Senator McCain Slams Ethanol

Senator John McCain ethanolIn a speech on the US economy given today in Independence, Missouri, Presidential candidate John McCain slammed federal support for ethanol.
And my administration will reduce the price of food by eliminating the subsidies for ethanol and agricultural goods. These subsidies inflate the price of food, not only for Americans but for people in poverty across the world, and I propose to abolish them.
In this painfully uninformed policy statement, Senator McCain ignores the repeated studies that show that ethanol demand has had limited impact on food prices. In fact, it has been the higher price of oil that has driven food cost inflation. In other studies, it's shown that the increase use of ethanol has kept gas prices down in part due to the increase in fuel supplies.

Ethanol subsidies are in place to encourage the OIL companies to invest in the technology and infrastructure to blend ethanol into our nation's fuel supply.

America needs to continue finding and funding alternative fuel solutions to improve the environment, break our dependence upon oil and provide for our economic and national security independence free from the tyranny of foreign oil

American voters, especially those who support renewable fuels and rural development, will have to weigh McCain's position on ethanol in a broader policy context of farm policy, taxes, national security, free trade, extreme environmentalism and federal fiscal responsibilities.

Ethanol enjoys wide support from both republican and democrat senators, congressmen and governors across the country. So they will be loathe to agree with any administration that seeks to turn back America's renewable energy growth.

But this much is clear: the next administration will need to support a robust rural farm economy that can both feed and fuel the country.

The GOP - Grand Oil Party Snubs Ethanol

Republican 2008 PlatformIt seems that while hurricane Gustav was busy shutting down oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico, oil operatives were busy tweaking the Republican platform (pdf) to shut down ethanol as an alternative fuel in America.

While calling for alternative fuels, the platform guts current incentives to invest in the infrastructure to make alternative fuels a reality.

"We must continue to develop alternative fuels, such as biofuels, especially cellulosic ethanol, and hasten their technological advances to next-generation production"

"The U.S. government should end mandates for ethanol and let the free market work."

We know that the market system is rigged against any type of new or alternative fuel. The oil industry has enjoyed a near-stranglehold over the American economy for years.  And the ethanol incentives actually go to the oil industry to encourage them to put the blending infrastructure in place for alternative fuels, including advanced cellulosic ethanol.

Support for the Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS) remains strong on both sides of the political aisle and across America.   This platform change hasn't gone unnoticed. So it will be interesting to see how the many Republican supporters of alternative fuels take to this sneaky backroom deal.

Paris Hilton Speaks Out on Energy

Who'd a thunk that Paris Hilton might have a better energy plan than Senators Obama or McCain?

So what's Paris's energy policy for America? Limited off-shore drilling with strict environmental oversight while creating tax incentives to get Detroit to make hybrid and electric cars.

Could it really be "Paris in '08"?

Beer Fuels Democrats

POTUS08 Democratic National Convention 2008 DenverDemocrats will drive with ethanol fuel made from beer at their national convention in Denver this summer.

The Denver 2008 Convention Host Committee announced last week that Molson Coors Brewing Company will be the Official E85 Ethanol Producer for the 2008 Democratic National Convention.

Molson Coors is donating all the clean-burning ethanol fuel for the fleet of General Motors flex-fuel vehicles to be used for Convention transportation needs.
"From fueling a national conversation about sustainability to fueling convention vehicles, we're working toward a green convention on every front," said Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper. "We are grateful for Molson Coors' donation of cleaner-burning fuel to ensure we host the greenest national political convention to date."
Coors is the nation's first major brewer to convert its waste beer into ethanol. The company began recycling waste beer - beer lost during packaging or deemed below quality standards - and converting it to ethanol in 1996. Today the Golden ethanol facility produces about three million gallons of ethanol per year.

Poll: Who Will Do the Most?

poll vote POTUS08 President CandidateAs the US Presidential primary race heads into the final days before "Super Tuesday", millions of dollars in television, newspaper, and radio ads will blanket American voters.

Health care, "economic stimulus" and who is more liberal or more conservative seem to be the "hot topics". But we suspect, based upon the first wave of ads, that few will sincerely address US economic and energy security independence.

So, for February, Our Food and Fuel Poll Question is:
"Which Candidate Will Do the Most to Promote US Energy Independence?"

(The poll can also be found in the right-hand column on the site. The poll will stay open until the end of February 2008.)

New Hampshire Voters Pick Winners

New Hampshire voters have turned out in record numbers to voice their support for their candidates yesterday. The two primary winners, Senators McCain (R) and Clinton (D) each provide a bit different view on renewable energy which bears reading.

Senator John McCain Ethanol Energy SecuritySenator John McCain's energy plans are a bit hard to find on his website. But with a little help from Google, we found the following that may help shed light on his thoughts regarding oil's impact on national security:
America's dependency on foreign oil is a major strategic vulnerability for our nation. One element in al Qaeda's war against us is to target the U.S. economy by driving up the price of oil in the hope that severe recession and higher inflation will follow. Osama bin Laden and other al Qaeda terrorists have spoken many times about the need to "mount ... operations accordingly" in order to hit energy supply points in the Middle East and other regions to spike oil prices.
In regards to alternative fuels, Sen. McCain offers up this support:
Alcohol fuels made from corn, sugar, switch grass, and many other sources, as well as fuel cells, biodiesel derived from waste products, natural gas, and other technologies are all promising and available alternatives to oil. I won't support subsidizing every alternative, or endorse tariffs that restrict the healthy competition which stimulates innovation and lowers costs. But I'll encourage the development of infrastructure and market growth necessary for these products to compete, and I'll let consumers choose the winners. I've never known an American entrepreneur worthy of the name who wouldn't rather compete for sales than subsidies.
Senator Hillary Clinton Food vs. Fuel Ethanol EnergySenator Clinton has has a proposed a energy policy on her campaign website HERE. Here's a snippet that includes her renewable fuels plan:
Create a Strategic Energy Fund
Hillary has proposed a Strategic Energy Fund that would inject $50 billion into research, development and deployment of renewable energy, energy efficiency, clean coal technology, ethanol and other homegrown biofuels. Hillary’s proposal would give oil companies a choice: invest in renewable energy or pay into the fund. Hillary’s proposal would also eliminate oil company tax breaks and make sure that oil companies pay their fair share for drilling on public lands. Instead of sending billions of dollars to the Middle East for their oil, Hillary’s proposal will create a new clean energy industry in America and create tens of thousands of jobs here.

And the Winners Are...

Iowa 2008 Caucus Ethanol Food vs FuelAs the final votes are tallied from the Iowa Caucuses, the two winners, Senator Barrack Obama (D) and former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee (R), it's worth looking at their biofuels position again. Both clearly understand the importance of renewable fuels in the heartland. But as the campaigns now move to other areas of the country, it will be interesting to see if their public comments match their previous commitments to biofuels. And of course, the other major candidates still remain in contention for their party's nominations.

Barack Obama Food vs Fuel Ethanol EnergyTwo points from Obama's official website are interesting to note:
"Develop the Next Generation of Biofuels - Deploy Cellulosic Ethanol: Obama will invest federal resources, including tax incentives, cash prizes and government contracts into developing the most promising technologies with the goal of getting the first two billion gallons of cellulosic ethanol into the system by 2013.

Expand Locally-Owned Biofuel Refineries
Less than 10 percent of new ethanol production today is from farmer owned refineries. New ethanol refineries help jumpstart rural economies....Barack Obama believes we must ensure that local investment continues to play a significant role as the biofuels industry continues to expand and evolve."
Finally, Senator Obama recently appeared at an ethanol plant opening/tour in Iowa. Dr. Zeiger from the Fields to Fuel Institute has a video of his remarks made that day, available HERE.

Mike Huckabee Food vs Fuel Ethanol EnergyWe've found a few key points from former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee. After a bit of site searching, a few points worth mentioning include support for energy independence, support for American agriculture and biofuel production. We especially liked the "we need more ethanol" statement.

Select quotes from Huckabee's campaign website regarding Agriculture Issues :
  • "We must help our farmers lead the way to energy independence."
  • "Besides growing our food, our farmers are growing our energy and leading the way to energy independence."
  • "We need more ethanol"
Select quotes from Huckabee's campaign website regarding Energy Issues :
  • Achieving energy independence is vital to achieving success both in the war on terror and in globalization. Energy independence will help guarantee both our safety and our prosperity.
As always, FoodandFuelAmerica.com does not support or endorse any candidate for any office. We're just highlighting the public positions of major candidates regarding energy and food and fuel issues.

Let the Race Begin in Iowa

Iowa Caucus Food and Fuel Ethanol President United States 2008Since 1972, the Iowa caucus has been the first major electoral event of the nominating process for President of the United States. The caucus has served as an early indication of which candidates for President of the United States might win the nomination of their political party at that party's national convention. The next Iowa caucus will be held on January 3, 2008.

Renewable energy plays an important aspect in Iowa's economy and politics. And the major candidates know they have to have a strong energy plan when campaigning in the state.

The Iowa Caucus.org site had several key facts on Iowa's role in renewable energy that are worth reading:
Iowa's agricultural industry is helping to feed and fuel the world. Iowa's corn, soybeans and windy plains are powering our vehicles and homes and positioning our state for energy independence.

Map of Ethanol Plants in Iowa [PDF: 44k]

  • Iowa is "First in the Nation" in ethanol production nationwide.
  • Iowa has 29 ethanol plants in operation, producing approximately 1.98 billion gallons per year. Eight of those plants are currently expanding capacity. And 10 new ethanol plants are under construction.
  • Iowa alone accounted for over 30 percent of the entire U.S. ethanol production.
  • Iowa’s biofuels industries have added $8 billion dollars to Iowa’s economy, generated $2 billion dollars in new household income, and created and supported 50,000 Iowa jobs.
Over the past few months, we've highlighted some of the top candidates' energy positions. Not all candidates were profiled because they did not make their energy positions easily found. But fear not, as they revise make their positions clearer, we'll try to get them all listed.

Joe Biden Proposes Renewable Fuel Objectives

Joe Biden Food vs Fuel Ethanol EnergyFrom time to time, Food and Fuel America.com highlights the leading 2008 US Presidential candidates' positions on renewable energy. Sometimes it's easy to find, other times it is not.

Senator Joe Biden (D-DE), a Democratic candidate for President, has been an outspoken supporter of biofuels. On his presidential website, he lists several points on his support for renewable fuels:
  • Requiring New Vehicles Be Flex-Fuel Vehicles: Joe Biden would require all cars marketed in the US be capable of running on E85/flex fuel or regular gasoline by 2017 - a cost estimated to be just $100 per car. Joe Biden would direct automakers to gradually increase flex-fuel vehicle (FFV) production, increasing ten percentage-point increments annually, until nearly all vehicles sold in the U.S. are flex fuel vehicles within 10 years. At this rate half of all vehicles sold in the US would be flex fuel vehicles in five years. Currently, flex-fuel vehicles -- those able to use both regular gasoline and blends of up to 85 percent ethanol (E85) – make up only about two percent of vehicles on the road today (5 million).
  • Requiring Large Gas Station Chains To Sell Alternative Fuels: Only around 1,300 of the 140,000 gas stations nationwide offer E85 or alternative fuels to customers. Major oil companies (those that own 4,500 stations or more) should offer alternative refueling capability at 50 percent of the stations they own by 2017. Joe Biden would require large chains to install E85 pumps at their stations, increasing by five percent annually over the next 10 years.
  • Increasing The Amount of Farm-Grown Fuel In Our Fuel Supply: Joe Biden would increase the amount of ethanol and biodiesel included in the nation's fuel supply by extending and increasing the current Renewable Fuel Standard and setting standards for biodiesel. Currently the Renewable Fuel Standard sets a benchmark of 7.5 billion gallons by 2012 – a fraction of the overall U.S. gasoline consumption which is 140 billion gallons per year. Joe Biden would increase the benchmarks to: 10 billion gallons by 2010; 30 billion gallons by 2020; 60 billion gallons by 2030.
As always, FoodandFuelAmerica.com does not support or endorse any candidate for any election. We will; however, continue to highlight important energy policy positions of the major candidates.

Rudy Giuliani Ethanol Energy Food vs. FuelA strong energy plan is key to America's economic and security future. And the office of the President of the United States has the greatest pulpit to lead America into the new century with bold ideas for a country, quite literally, dying for energy.

From time to time, we've highlighted the energy policies of the major presidential candidates.

This time up is Rudy Giuliani, former mayor of New York City who is running as a Republican.

From his official website regarding agriculture:
I’m someone who from the very beginning has been a supporter of ethanol and one of the major commitments I made to the American people when I laid out my 12 commitments in Iowa, was the idea that we have to, with a tremendous amount of attention and a tremendous amount of emphasis, we have to move toward energy independence. And ethanol is a big part of that.”
His site also notes specifics commitments for energy including:

Barack Obama Supports Biofuels

Barack Obama Food vs Fuel Ethanol EnergyThe US presidential campaign season is heating up faster than the price of a barrel of oil. We continue to highlight the leading presidential candidates' position on renewable energy.

Two points from Obama's official website are interesting to note:

"Develop the Next Generation of Biofuels
Barack Obama will work to ensure that advanced biofuels, including cellulosic ethanol, are developed and incorporated into our national supply as soon as possible. Corn ethanol is the most successful alternative fuel commercially available in the U.S. today, and we should fight the efforts of big oil and big agri-business to undermine this emerging industry

Fred Thompson Now Supports Ethanol

Fred Thompson Food vs Fuel Ethanol Energy"Does he" or "Doesn't he"? Support ethanol, that is.

That was the question for former senator Fred Thompson on the campaign trail. It's probably no real surprise but the republican presidential candidate now sees the tremendous benefits of ethanol. In fact, he cited national and economic security (dead link) as reasons for his support of ethanol. In Iowa, of all places. Imagine that.

A quick check of his official campaign website finds that he supports a wide variety of energy sources:

Energy Security

The energy challenges our nation faces today are real and significant. Our dependence on foreign sources of oil threatens our national security and puts our economic prosperity at risk. America must rise to the challenge and take the steps necessary to become more energy independent before this becomes a crisis. No one solution will solve the energy challenges we face; all ideas must be on the table. Greater energy security will enhance our ability to pursue our foreign policy and national security objectives. Increasing our energy independence and investing in alternative energy sources will also produce a healthier environment. And while we don’t know for certain how or why climate change is occurring, it makes sense to take reasonable steps to reduce CO2 emissions without harming our economy. Overall, I am committed to:
  • A balanced approach to energy security that increases domestic supplies, reduces demand for oil and gas, and promotes alternative fuels and other diverse energy sources.
  • Investing in renewable and alternative fuels to promote greater energy independence and a cleaner environment.
  • An energy policy that invests in the advanced technologies of tomorrow and places more emphasis on conservation and energy efficiency.
  • Conducting research and development into technologies that improve the environment, especially the reduction of CO2 emissions.
As the presidential campaign heats up, there'll be more discussion on how the candidates' plans for energy resonate with voters. Stay tuned. And just a reminder, we do not and will not support any candidate. Our goal is only to highlight public positions taken by candidates regarding renewable energy.

Hillary Rodham Clinton, currently a senator from New York and now running for President, has an inconsistent policy on renewable fuels. But this is presidential season and she has to appeal to voters outside of New York.

She has a proposed a energy policy on her campaign website HERE but here's a snippet that includes her renewable fuels plan:
Create a Strategic Energy Fund
Hillary has proposed a Strategic Energy Fund that would inject $50 billion into research, development and deployment of renewable energy, energy efficiency, clean coal technology, ethanol and other homegrown biofuels. Hillary’s proposal would give oil companies a choice: invest in renewable energy or pay into the fund. John Edwards Outlines Biofuels Plan

John Edwards Food vs. Fuel Ethanol EnergyAlthough FoodandFuelAmerica.com does not endorse any candidate for any office, as we find interesting statements from candidates supporting or opposing renewable energy, we'll try to get something posted.*

Today US Presidential candidate John Edwards (D) released his plans for biofuels. Convenient that he was in Iowa!
  • Give Kids a Biofuel Ride to School: Today, Edwards announced a new Biofuel Buses program to help school districts replace conventional diesel with cleaner-burning biodiesel blends in 100,000 school buses nationwide. Biodiesel reduces bus-riding children’s exposure to cancer and asthma-causing emissions.
  • Boost Biofuel Production: Edwards will invest in public-private research partnerships to develop ways to maximize America’s biofuel ouput while minimizing pollution, soil erosion, and water, land and energy use.
  • Build Out the Biofuels Infrastructure: Edwards will require oil companies to install biofuel pumps at 25 percent of their gas stations and require all new cars sold after 2010 to be “flex fuel” cars running on either gasoline or biofuel.
  • Make American Cars and Trucks Virtually Petroleum-Free: Edwards believes that American automakers have the ingenuity to lead the world in building the clean, safe, economical cars of the future. He will provide $1 billion a year to help U.S. automakers advance and apply the latest technology, including biofuels, hybrid and electric cars, hydrogen fuel cells, ultra-light materials, and drive train improvements.
  • Raise Fuel Economy Standards: Edwards believes that everyone should be able to drive the car, truck or SUV of their choice and still enjoy high fuel economy. American cars and trucks are less efficient than they were two decades ago, despite the corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) standards. Edwards will raise standards to 40 miles per gallon by 2016, a step that could single-handedly reduce oil demand by 4 million barrels per day.
