Ethanol CoProducts: Food, Fuel, Feed and Filler?

DDGS Dried Distillers Grain ethanol coproductA coproduct of ethanol production could be used as a non-petroleum-based filler in plastics, based on preliminary studies by USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientists and their cooperators.

The ethanol coproduct, called distiller's dried grains with solubles (DDGS), has a high fiber content and a molecular structure suitable for binding—two attributes that make it a candidate as a filler in plastics.

Fillers such as clay, talc, glass, paper and metals are commonly used in plastics to increase strength, and also to save costs by reducing the amount of actual plastic resin used. Using bio-based fillers such as bamboo, kenaf, corn stover, soybean hulls or even chicken feathers is receiving increased attention as a way to use less petroleum in plastic products.

New Research Shows No E. Coli Link

Kansas State University research beef dried distillers grains E. coliRemember all of the hoopla a few months ago that ethanol somehow caused E. coli in beef?

Well a new study (pdf) produced by the same researchers at Kansas State University shows no correlation between feeding distillers dried grains (DDGs) and E. coli.

The key finding is this report is pretty clear:
"Unlike our previous studies, we found no evidence to indicate that dietary inclusion of distiller’s grains or corn processing methods have a significant effect on the prevalence E. coli O157 or Salmonella in cattle feces."
Apparently, good news doesn't sell papers or more commercials so this new finding isn't getting much attention in the media. Imagine that.

The report was funded by the Kansas Beef Council and the National Cattlemen's Beef Association.

University Launches New Website for Livestock Producers on Dried Distillers Grains

Iowa State University Food vs Fuel Dried Distillers GrainsA new Iowa State University Web site is designed to help livestock and poultry producers find a place for their operations in the bioeconomy.
“The emerging ethanol industry creates new opportunities and challenges for livestock and poultry producers,” said John Lawrence, economics professor who directs the Iowa Beef Center. “On one hand, it’s use of corn presents competition for feed, but ethanol processing produces a new feedstuff, distillers grains with solubles (DGS).”
The new site, Livestock and Poultry in the Bioeconomy, is available online at: http://www.ag.iastate.edu/aginfo/livebio.

The site offers advice to beef, swine, dairy and poultry producers through reports, software and links to other Web sites. Most of the information deals with feeding DDGS and the economics of the new feed source.
“Cash receipts from animal agriculture make up more than half of Iowa’s cash farm receipts, and nationally livestock and poultry production is the largest use for corn,” Lawrence said. “This site is a resource for the latest research from Iowa State and other universities on feeding and managing ethanol co-products.”
Dried Distillers Grains, a co-product of the ethanol process, provide an important nutrition feed source for animals.

DDGS Exports to Japan Reach Record Levels

US Grains Council Logo CornAccording to the U.S. Grains Council in a new report, market share of U.S. imported distiller’s dried grains with solubles (DDGS) in Japan reached 96 percent for the month of October 2007.

DDGS are a highly nutritious, valuable co-product from the ethanol process that is returned to use as feed for animals.

With large DDGS imports in both July and August and a slight drop in September, the month of October marks the highest imports on record in Japan with 16,607 metric tons from the United States.

Cary Sifferath, U.S. Grains Council senior director in Japan, states U.S. DDGS exports to Japan have grown to more than 85,000 metric tons in the first ten months of 2007.
“DDGS imports by Japan continue to be on pace for more than 100,000 metric tons for calendar year 2007,” he said. We now see regular shipments of DDGS from the United States to Japan in both bulk vessel and container shipments.”
As ethanol production increases in the United States, dried distillers grains will be a valuable co-product that will help the US continue to feed the world.

Egypt Learns About US Grains

US media has been quick to jump on the "food vs fuel" debate but often without all of the facts. The corn ethanol process creates a co-product, Dried Distillers Grains (DDG) that can be used for animal feed.

Recently a delegation of Egyptian agriculture representatives learned more about DDGs while on a tour of the US sponsored by the US Grains Council.

Representatives of the Egyptian feed milling, aquaculture, dairy, beef cattle, water buffalo and poultry sectors, as well as a grain importer, received an in-depth look at DDG production, handling and use as they toured ethanol plants, a dairy operation and a grain loading facility. The team also learned about the nutrient composition of DDGs as well as the outlook for corn and ethanol prices.”

According to the Council, Egypt imported 58,000 metric tons of distillers grains in 2006.

The US Grains Council is a non-profit organization that promotes the exports of US grains and related products.

AP Finally Gets an Ethanol Story Right

DDG DDGS Dried Distillers Grains Food vs Fuel Ethanol EnergyAfter repeating the mantra over and over that corn for ethanol takes corn away from the food supply, it's interesting to note today's AP Centerpiece: "Byproduct helps ranchers near ethanol plants"

In it, AP reports that "dairy farmers and beef ranchers are finding advantages to being close to an ethanol plant" and "can save money by buying wet distillers grains." And just what is this new secret that AP has finally learned?

The secret is of course is Dried Distillers Grains (DDG), an important coproduct from the corn ethanol process that returns the unused parts of corn such as the fats, proteins and minerals into a highly desired fed that cattlemen and the livestock industry can use to feed their animals. Of course, if AP had checked here on foodandfuelamerica.com, they would have already known this.

The story also includes a quote from a cattleman who says that he is increasing his usage because dried distillers grains are working so well.

Now if the media would dig just a little deeper, they'd learn a whole lot more about how renewable fuels are part of the solution and not just repeat the talking points of the doomsayers.

Taiwanese Buyers Exploring U.S. Dried Distiller Grains

Taiwan is a major importer of American corn and other agricultural products. So it's worthwhile to note that a trade delegation was recently here in the US to learn more about dried distiller grains (DDGs)---a co-product from the ethanol production process that retains the nutritious fats, minerals and proteins found in corn. According to the US Grains Council this month:
Seven industry leaders representing Taiwan’s poultry and swine sectors are learning about the quality U.S. distiller’s dried grains with solubles (DDGS) by following the production and export channel from corn in the field to the ethanol plant to the export container. Taiwan has imported 67,037 tons of U.S. DDGS during the first six months of the year, a 63 percent increase compared to the same period in 2006.

Through team visits like this, the Grains Council is educating Taiwan’s new generation of agricultural leaders on the advantages of U.S. corn and DDGS to help maintain the United States’ position as Taiwan’ largest corn supplier.

High Milk Prices, Part 3

Milk price stories in the media are still drawing a lot of attention. And most of them are spewing the same inaccurate information. So it's surprising to read today on CNN, "Skyrocketing milk prices hit families just in time for school" that has the story almost correct. The article reports that worldwide demand and Australian drought are causing the higher prices. But it still leaves the notion that all input costs get passed along to consumers in final food prices. And it conveniently ignores higher energy, marketing and labor costs---which have been shown to be the biggest cost drivers. Nor does it get into the facts of how much corn is actually used or that the ethanol process creates Dried Distillers Grains that is used for animal feed. Well, reporting is at least getting a little bit better.

Corn Growers: Food and Fuel Report Released

The National Corn Growers Association has released a new report, "US Corn Growers: Producing Food and Fuel (PDF)" which helps to highlight how corn growers' ability to meet the demands of the food and fuel markets.

Some highlights from the report:
  • The Ethanol Process Creates Feed and Food Ingredients
    Ethanol isn’t the only product created by the fuel alcohol fermentation process. Every 56-pound bushel of corn used in the dry grind ethanol process yields 18 pounds of distillers grains, a good source of energy and protein for livestock and poultry. Similarly, a bushel of corn in the wet mill ethanol process creates 13.5 pounds of corn gluten feed and 2.6 pounds of high protein corn gluten meal, as well as corn oil used in food processing. The ethanol process removes only starch—not fat or protein—from the feed and food market. The starch portion of the kernel is converted to ethanol, while the protein, fat and other nutrients, vitamins and minerals are passed through to the feed coproducts or human food ingredients. Protein, which is left intact by the ethanol process, is a highly valued product in world food and feed markets. Conversely, starch is abundantly available and lower in value. Aside from preserving the protein, a considerable portion of the corn’s original digestible energy is also preserved in the distillers grains.
  • Record Demand for Corn is Being Met with Record Supplies
    Demand for corn is at an all-time high, due in large part to the rapid increase in corn-based ethanol production.
  • Corn Demand for Food and Feed is Plateauing
    Because other corn demand categories show signs of only limited future growth, it is expected that most of the additional supply resulting from expanded acreage and higher yields will be available for biofuels production.
  • Ethanol is Produced from Field Corn, Not Sweet Corn
    Some purveyors of the “food versus fuel” argument seem to forget that ethanol is made from field corn, a grain that is undigestible by humans in its raw form. Unlike sweet corn, field corn requires some form of processing before it can be consumed by humans. Moreover, very little field corn is actually used for human food ingredient processing. As an example, just 1.5 percent of the 2006/07 crop was used for cereals, while other human food uses accounted for roughly 9 percent of total corn use. The overwhelming majority of U.S. corn, including exports, feeds livestock—not humans.
And finally:
  • “The consumers should complain to The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and not to the farmer if they’re unhappy with food prices. The U.S. regularly encounters food inflation even when corn and soybean prices are low or falling. Retailers and food processors typically put an extra markup on top of any increase in commodity prices.”

Distillers Grains Key to Texas Livestock

One message that is often overlooked by major media when they report "Food vs. Fuel" stories is that corn based ethanol (CBE) is both food AND fuel. How can that be? Well in the ethanol process, only the starch is removed. What's left, the nutritious protein and fiber called Dried Distillers Grains (DDG), is an important co-product that can continue to feed the livestock industry in the US and even the world.

According to a recent report by Texas A&M University, "There's no reason the cattle-feeding industry in Texas cannot remain strong and viable if it incorporates distiller's grains into rations".

Dr. Jim MacDonald, Experiment Station beef cattle nutritionist, also states "So we'd better figure out how to feed distiller's grains".

The good news that is that two ethanol plants are opening soon in the Texas Panhandle, providing a steady supply of distiller's grains and making the alternative feedstock even more attractive.

"In the future, as long as it is priced relative to corn, I think there will be a necessity to use this new large pool of feed," MacDonald said.

He goes on to state, "The beef and dairy industries are in the best position of any of the livestock industry to use distiller's grains".

The report also noted that the growth of the ethanol industry in the Corn Belt has created a greater demand for corn in that area and now they now have a large surplus distiller's grains. That could make them cheaper to rail into Texas than whole corn.

Livestock Industry Embracing Distillers Grains

USDA NASS Livestock Ethanol DDG Food vs FuelA new report published by the USDA shows that livestock operations (beef, dairy, swine) are embracing ethanol co-products, known as distillers grains and corn gluten feed, as a nutritious component of their feeding operations. Over 9,000 operations in the Midwest were surveyed.

This news is important because it shows that
the co-products of the ethanol process of converting corn to ethanol are being used for feed in the livestock industry.

The report found that in 2006 ethanol co-products were fed to livestock at 38% of dairy, 36% of cattle-on-feed, 13% of beef cattle, and 12% of hog operations.


As the ethanol industry produces more ethanol, these co-products will allow America's amazing agriculture community to continue feeding the US and the world.

Ethanol Byproducts Pelletized

The USDA Agriculture Research Service announced this week that they've made a major achievement in improving the functionality of an ethanol by-product---Dried Distillers Grains with Solubles (DDGS) shaped into pellets. DDGS are nutritional "left-overs" from the ethanol process that can be used for animal feed. It is just one example of how ethanol does not have to mean food OR fuel but rather both food AND fuel. And being formed into pellets means corn has greater continued use as a feed for cattle, pork, fish and poultry. Here's the news from the USDA:

One hundred percent of distiller's dried grains with solubles (DDGS), a byproduct of ethanol production, can be pelletized without adding a binding agent or anything else, according to Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientists and cooperators.

ARS agricultural engineeer Kurt Rosentrater has turned DDGS from corn-based ethanol production into high-quality pellets using processing equipment at a commercial feed mill. And the heating used in pelletizing did not harm the high-protein, low-starch nutrient content. Rosentrater is at the ARS North Central Agricultural Research Laboratory, Brookings, S.D. He does this research with colleagues at ARS and at nearby South Dakota State University.

Cattle feed is currently the primary outlet for distiller's grain. But other livestock such as swine and poultry can also eat it. To date, there are no commercial DDGS pellets available for livestock, which limits the byproduct’s use in rangeland settings. DDGS is the protein, fat, fiber, unconverted starch and ash left over after ethanol production.

Fish raised for food in the growing aquaculture industry eat pelletized feed, but those pellets contain commercial fish meal as a protein source, not the less-expensive distiller's grain. Rosentrater is experimenting with adding soy and corn flour to distiller's grain to produce pelletized feeds, to see how far he can reduce the fish meal—or if he can eliminate it entirely.

This pelletizing work also promises to solve a growing problem of product deterioration—as well as hardening and caking problems during shipping and storage, which can clog the various chutes and bins that DDGS flows through. With an increasing supply of the byproduct, ethanol plants have to ship it greater distances to reach markets.

South Dakota, one of the country's biggest ethanol-producing states, expects to produce a billion gallons of ethanol to fuel vehicles next year—about the entire nation's production in 1999. Today, nationwide ethanol production is more than five billion gallons a year, and that amount will increase as new plants come online.

Ethanol plants are spreading outside of the Corn Belt, with plants now in New York and California, for example.

DDGs to Mexico On the Rise


Critics of ethanol--especially corn ethanol- like to use scare tactics to sow fear, uncertainty and doubt (FUD) into the public forum by framing the discussion that corn used for ethanol is diverted from the food supply chain.

The good news is that ethanol process by-products (in this case, DDGs-Dried Distillers Grains) allow the highly-nutritional value of corn to be used for the food market. Corn-based ethanol is not a food OR fuel issue. It's Food AND Fuel.

This week, the US Grains Council released a report that Mexican livestock producers are seeing the benefits associated with using DDGs. Some key points from the report:
  • DDGS, a co-product of ethanol production, are an affordable and efficient feed source for livestock.
  • In 2003, Mexico imported less than 50,000 metric tons of U.S. DDGS, but last year’s total shipment amounted to 438,347 tons
  • U.S. DDGS exports to Mexico had increased by 21,173 tons. Then DDGS exports again increased by 238,971 tons to 428,347 tons in 2006.
  • As of May this year, 327,859 tons have been transported to Mexico
  • As the push for ethanol production persists in the United States, the amount of DDGS for export will increase significantly
  • For every gallon of ethanol that is produced in the United States, nearly 7 pounds of DDGS are derived.
  • For example, a 40 million gallon ethanol plant would have an output of 266 million pounds of DDGS.
