Good Fuels, Good Videos

We hear it every day, Americans want to be rid of foreign oil. And they know something about renewable fuels like ethanol.

But the issue has been poisoned by the scary messages spread by Big Oil and Big Food over the past year. We'll have nothing to eat; we'll have no money left if we use ethanol.

So it's good to see new adverts for the general population like the new ones that started to run this past weekend on the Sunday-morning talkshows. Two new commercials, Faces and Places, have started to appear.

Expect even more as the energy debate continues to get national attention.

OPEC is Not Our Friendly Neighbor

NozzleRage Mr. Rogers Neighborhood parodyThe good folks at NozzleRage are back with a new video showing the impact of foreign oil.

A kindly neighbor tells viewers about how foreign oil hurts our neighborhood and how we can support open fuel legislation.

We're pretty sure OPEC hasn't been too friendly in our neighborhood lately. We need to buy a whole lot less oil from them. High oil prices and limited competition for transportation fuels hurts us all.

Our cars should run on many alternative fuels like ethanol and not just gasoline bought from foreign, and often hostile, countries. And cleaner burning renewable fuels help build a stronger and cleaner America.

Now THAT really would make it a beautiful day in our neighborhood!

Corn Growers Respond to EPA Waiver Denial

The National Corn Growers Association was quick to thank the EPA for its recent decision to deny Texas' request for a waiver from the Renewable Fuel Standard.

According to association president Ron Litterer:
“The higher energy costs, the higher everything else costs,” Litterer said. “Corn ethanol helps provide energy independence and keep energy prices down. It’s part of the solution to the real problem.”
Rick Tolman, CEO of the organization, was interviewed on FoxBusiness yesterday about the EPA's decision and its impact on consumers, buinesses and corn growers.

We had to laugh a bit when the interviewer seemed to know very little about ethanol. The only time she had seen a station was when she was in FRANCE! She really should get out of the Big Apple and visit the rest of America.

Ethanol is blended into gasoline across the country as E10 (an oxygenate replacing the poisonous MTBE) and now at over 1,600 fueling stations as E85. E10 is 10% blend of ethanol with 90% ethanol suitable for all vehicles and E85 is a blend of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline available for newer Flexible Fuel Vehicles (FFVs).

We also have a complete list of E85 Fueling Sites here at FoodandFuel America.com which offer E85 locations, including for both web and mobile devices.

Paris Hilton Speaks Out on Energy

Who'd a thunk that Paris Hilton might have a better energy plan than Senators Obama or McCain?

So what's Paris's energy policy for America? Limited off-shore drilling with strict environmental oversight while creating tax incentives to get Detroit to make hybrid and electric cars.

Could it really be "Paris in '08"?

Where is Matt? Dancing, Of Course!

We don't go off topic very often here at Food and Food America, but sometimes it's worth a quick jaunt around the Net. It can help, maybe in some small way, to personalize the nature of the world around us.

Matt Harding, a world traveler at heart, has a new video out of his world-wide dancing escapades. Now this is not ballet at its finest. At best, his dancing style could be called goofy and maybe even dorky. But it is infectious. And the music and scenery are breathtaking.

Where the Hell is Matt? (2008) from Matthew Harding on Vimeo.

Which leads us to ponder. Just where are all of these people going to get their food and fuel?

And with economic policies that attack farmers, stifle food production, limit fuel options and increase costs? It's a small world indeed.

Happy Oil Dependence Day

United States Independence Day July Fourth FlagAs we celebrate and honor America's independence today on July 4th, it's hard not to mourn our nation's continued dependence upon oil, especially foreign oil.

Billions of dollars of our country's wealth is being transferred to foreign governments who own foreign oil companies---many of which despise the values we celebrate today.

So how much foreign oil do we buy? In the first 4 months of 2008, the US imported over 1.57 billion barrels of oil. And almost half of that came from OPEC countries. As the price of oil continues to climb reaching new levels--first breaking the $100 a barrel mark, then $110, $115, $125 and now $145, each barrel bought from abroad really buys us continued dependence upon foreign governments.

Happy Birthday America.

The hard-working folks at the Illinois Corn Network have a new video on America's love affair with oil, "Anti Dependence Day". With special guests All-American Heroes Abraham Lincoln, Uncle Sam, Captain CORNelius battling against super-villain Big Oil.

Google Learns How to Break Free from OPEC

In his book "Energy Victory: Winning the War on Terror by Breaking Free of Oil," world-renowned engineer and best-selling author Dr. Robert Zubrin lays out a bold plan for breaking the economic stranglehold that the OPEC oil cartel has on our country and the world.

Earlier this year, Google invited Dr. Robert Zubrin to its main campus to speak to employees regarding energy issues.

Zubrin presents persuasive evidence that our decades-long relationship with OPEC has resulted in the looting of our economy, the corruption of our political system, and now the funding and protection of terrorist regimes and movements that are committed to our destruction.

Pile It On

Illinois Corn network ethanolA new video from the Illinois Corn Network helps explain the current supply and demand issues regarding the US corn crop:
America is NOT running out of corn. While the ethanol market is rising a great deal, the other corn markets like feed and food products have basically peaked or are only rising at a steady rate each year. The yield increases in each year's harvest are enough to meet the needs of all the markets

This Little Piggy Makes Biodiesel

high plains bioenergy biodiesel pork fatWaste pork fat is made into biodiesel at a new facility in Oklahoma.

Construction of a 30 million-gallon-per-year biodiesel plant was completed earlier this year.

Located next to Seaboard Foods' pork processing plant in Guymon, Oklahoma, the plant is able to make 1 gallon of biodiesel per each pound of waste animal fat.

The High Plains Bioenergy should be at full capacity later this month.

This video explains more about the plant, the biodiesel process and the economic value that this new facility brings to Oklahoma.

Energy Victory Through Competition

Robert Zubrin, author of "Energy Victory" lays out his thoughts on the current oil crisis and his ideas for lowering the price of oil down through competition.

Among his suggestions, Zubrin advocates:
  • The solution is for an open fuel market.
  • OPEC can keep prices high due to its vertical market.
  • US should require flex fuel vehicles running on alcohol fuels made from a variety of sources.
  • This would force gas to compete, bring prices down and keep them there through continued world-wide competition.

Corn Growers Respond to Food and Fuel

Jon Doggett National Corn Growers Association Ethanol Food and FuelJust how much of an impact are biofuels having on food prices? That was the question posed to the corn growers this week.

In an on-camera interview with Environment and Energy Publishing's OnPoint, Jon Doggett, vice president of public policy at the National Corn Growers Association, says commodities prices are having a negligible impact on the price of food.

He says other factors are contributing more significantly. Doggett also discusses how the 2007 biofuels mandate will affect long-term food and grain costs.
Monica Trauzzi: Do you believe that the use of corn for the production of biofuels is having an impact on our grocery bills?

Jon Doggett:
It's negligible. And, in fact, probably the presence of ethanol in the gasoline market is bringing down the cost of gasoline that you're going to use to drive to the store that should probably end up being cheaper than the increase you're going to see in food costs.

Monica Trauzzi:
What impact do you believe the 2007 biofuels mandate is going to have moving forward on the price of food and the price of corn?

Jon Doggett: Our trend line yields are going up significantly. We are using better seed corn than we've ever used before. Every year that gets better and better. Our yields are going up exponentially and so I think we're going to have an opportunity to meet that demand, meet the demand in the world market, meet the demand for our traditional customers in the livestock industry, meet the demand for industrial uses, meet the demand for food.

Rising Gas Prices Hurting Small Businesses

house of representatives small businessA group of small-business owners and experts told a Congressional committee this week that high oil prices are driving down profits and are hurting their bottom lines.
"We are cutting everything we can cut to stay alive,” Pennsylvania trucking company owner Michael J. Graff said.
The Subcommittee on Investigations and Oversight, chaired by Congressman Jason Altmire (PA), heard testimony from a panel of expert witnesses and examined the impact that rising fuel prices are having on small firms.
“Rising gas prices are contributing to the economic slowdown, straining the pocketbooks of hardworking families and the bottom lines of small businesses. Given that small businesses are our nation’s single largest employer, we need to do everything we can to make sure they thrive,” Altmire said.
The business owners and experts explained that the only way many can cover these increased costs is by foregoing any investment in capital or the planned expansion of their business. This would limit job growth at a time when the American economy needs it most.

Americans are sadly learning that pain at the pump also translates to canceled vacations, higher grocery bills and business lay offs. As small businesses operate on razor-thin margins and rely on competitive pricing to remain viable, passing fuel costs on to customers could result in devastating loss of sales or, in the long term, shutting their doors.

John M. Urbanchuk, a consultant who specializes in agriculture and biofuels, said that ethanol already is taking some pressure off gasoline prices and will continue to do so as federal mandates increase for renewable fuel use. View his testimony HERE and read his full report HERE.

Orange Flavored Ethanol

Florida oranges ethanol USDAUSDA researchers are turning oranges into ethanol in a new process being tested in Florida.

Being tested at an Agriculture Research Services lab in Winter Haven, the process uses the waste remains of oranges from the production of orange juice.

Only about 50 % of an orange is used in the orange juice production process. So the researchers are developing improved methods to turn the citrus peel and waste into ethanol that can be used as a transportation fuel.

The "oranges to ethanol" process is still being tested but it's possible that soon our cars will be running on this "juiced up" fuel.

T. Boone Pickens Picks Ethanol; Warns of Danger of Foreign Oil

T Boone Pickens oil ethanolLegendary oilman T. Boone Pickens sounded the alarm about the dire consequences of America's dependence on foreign oil.

He's not the first person to do so but his influence as one of America's top moneymen should help convince others of the increased financial danger to America's economy.

Pickens appeared on CNBC's "Squawk Box" this past week and said that half a trillion dollars of America's wealth is being plundered by foreign oil suppliers every year.
"You take 10 years and you've got $5 trillion," said Pickens. "That's more than $1 billion a day. We can't stand that."
He went on to tell the viewers on CNBC:
"If we do not get on the alternative energy bandwagon and if we don't have a global recession, we could be sitting on $150 oil in two years."
Finally, Pickens talked about changing his stance on support of more American-grown ethanol:
"I'd rather have ethanol, and recirculate the money in the country, than to have it go out the back door on us."
