New California Alliance Promotes Biodiesel

A new non-profit trade association dedicated to promoting the increased use and production of biodiesel in California has been launched.

The new organization, the California Biodiesel Alliance (CBA), is comprised of a diverse group of those seeking to improve California's air quality, reduce California's dependence upon foreign oil and and reduce greenhouse emissions through the use of biodiesel. These members include biodiesel suppliers, producers, fuel marketers, technology providers, fuel retailers, consumers, and advocates.

The CBA aims to aid in the development of biodiesel production, education and representing the industry in California and Washington DC.

Alliance Chairman Eric Bowen of Tellurian Biodiesel has been a long-time blogger about renewable energy and has a blog at http://allthingsbiodiesel.blogspot.com/ that is worth reading.

New Report Addresses Ethanol Issues

According to a new report by a broad coalition of industry, government and non-profit organizations released Monday, producing fuel ethanol in the United States generates jobs and wealth by processing domestic resources into clean burning transportation fuels.

The report, The 2007 Edition of the Ethanol Fact Book (pdf), is published by the Clean Fuels Development Coalition and distributed through the Ethanol Across America campaign. The main report is 60 pages but the Executive Summary (pdf) makes for easier reading.

The Ethanol Fact Book addresses issues regarding the ethanol tax incentive, energy security and oil import reductions, economic impacts and benefits to the U.S. Treasury, greenhouse gas reduction and environmental benefits, and advancements in cellulose conversion technologies. In addition, it addresses the developments in flexible fuel vehicle production and current issues such as food versus fuel and net energy balance

Egypt Learns About US Grains

US media has been quick to jump on the "food vs fuel" debate but often without all of the facts. The corn ethanol process creates a co-product, Dried Distillers Grains (DDG) that can be used for animal feed.

Recently a delegation of Egyptian agriculture representatives learned more about DDGs while on a tour of the US sponsored by the US Grains Council.

Representatives of the Egyptian feed milling, aquaculture, dairy, beef cattle, water buffalo and poultry sectors, as well as a grain importer, received an in-depth look at DDG production, handling and use as they toured ethanol plants, a dairy operation and a grain loading facility. The team also learned about the nutrient composition of DDGs as well as the outlook for corn and ethanol prices.”

According to the Council, Egypt imported 58,000 metric tons of distillers grains in 2006.

The US Grains Council is a non-profit organization that promotes the exports of US grains and related products.

Race with Danica and Ethanol at the Indy 500

The Indy Racing League demands top performance from its cars and drivers. And the IRL thinks ethanol is a high-performance fuel. That's why they've switched to ethanol for their cars.

American consumers are using ethanol to fuel their cars too. And now, 15 lucky drivers can drive like the pros at the Indianapolis 500.

Peak Antifreeze is sponsoring a sweepstakes with a once-in-a-lifetime prize:

15 lucky winners will receive a once-in-a-lifetime VIP trip to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the pole qualifying weekend. The winners will receive VIP hospitality access, pit tours, and a chance to see if Danica can make history as the first women to qualify for the pole starting position for the 92nd running of the Indianapolis 500. After you've seen the pro's do it, you'll be given tips on driving an IndyCar by Danica Patrick and you will get to drive an Indy style car at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, something that a nonprofessional racer has never been allowed to do in the speedway's 100 year history during the month of May!
You can enter the contest online HERE. (be sure to read the rules, etc. etc.etc.)

What is it like to race in an Indy car using ethanol? Take a look at this video.

Ethanol, Tortillas and the Ol' Gray Lady

The New York Times on its "Wheels" blog published a post this week that provoked discussions regarding ethanol and food for fuel. The post, "Ethanol and the Tortilla Tax" contributed by Jerry Garret, trotted out many of the worn-out myths seen in the media over the past few months. We really expected better from the ol' Gray Lady

Some of the more interesting misleading myths included citing only 1 report that advocated that ethanol is a "net energy loser" (see HERE for the ones that show it to be positive); that beer prices are rising due to corn ethanol (see HERE for the Denver Post's report that looked at the issue); and just for fun, the post's theme was that while we drive cars here in the US, poor Mexicans are rioting over tortilla prices (hmm, Mexican tortillas are from white corn, not yellow field corn).

But the clincher that showed Jerry had little to no knowledge of agriculture or even ethanol was that he "used to like plain ol' corn on the cob". Well, Jerry, that good ol' sweet corn is still there.

Maybe
someone will be kind enough to send him a bushel of dried yellow #2 field corn from this year's harvest.

What's Orange and Green and Goes to College?

What's Orange and Green and Goes to College? Well it might just be Sebastian, the University of Miami mascot riding the Soy-based "Hurry"Cane shuttle buses on campus.

In a continuing effort to become more environmentally friendly the University of Miami is launching a program to use soy-based biodiesel fuel in its ‘Hurry’Cane shuttle fleet. During the pilot program, which will run through the 2007 fall semester, nine of the 17 ‘Hurry’Cane shuttle buses will operate on B20 soy-based biodiesel fuel.

The university has a goal to be climate neutral in the next ten years. And using renewable fuels is one step the university is taking to do its part.

Biodiesel fuel is produced domestically using soy, vegetable oil, animal fats or even recycled restaurant grease.
