In doing so, the President remarked:
"Today we make a major step with the Energy Independence and Security Act. We make a major step toward reducing our dependence on oil, confronting global climate change, expanding the production of renewable fuels and giving future generations of our country a nation that is stronger, cleaner and more secure."The new legislations give strong support to alternative fuels like ethanol. The goal is for the US to produce 36 billion gallons a year by 2022. The legislation also increases the average mileage standard to 35 miles per gallon by 2020.
