New Site for Alternative Fuel Prices

Alternative Fuel prices alt fuel prices food vs fuelOne of the most rewarding aspects of maintaining FoodandFuelAmerica.com is the number of comments and emails we receive. A few come from wacky trolls looking for a fight and others are interested in the whole blogging aspect. But most are positive with insightful comments about renewable fuels, farming, media outreach or just asking about other food and fuel resources on the net.

Recently the developer of a new alternative fuel price website, www.AltFuelPrices.com, sent along his link and some information on how and why he started the website.
AltFuelPrices.com was originally started as CNGPrices.com when I purchased a CNG powered vehicle. There were plenty of sites out there that would tell you how much it costs to buy gas at different gas staions, but that information was lacking for alternative fuel stations, including my new CNG car. With the quickly increasing popularity of alternative fuel cars and trucks, and with a recent purchase of my own Honda Civic GX, I wanted to know CNG prices near me. So I whipped up this site to do just that. - Todd
The site has expanded to include other fuels besides Compress Natural Gas (CNG) and includes Biodiesel, E85 Ethanol, Electric, Hydrogen, Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) locations. Users can submit price and location updates to help keep the site up-to-date. Todd's goal is for the site to be a good resource to others who have or are looking to purchase an alternative vehicle.

Senate Passes Energy Bill

US Senate Seal Food vs Fuel Ethanol Energy(Update-President Bush Signs Energy Legislation) The US Senate passed, 86 to 8, an energy bill today that moves the country forward in securing energy independence and security and the production of renewable fuels.

Specifically, they voted on the "Motion to Concur in the Amendment of the House to the Amendment of the Senate to the Text of H.R. 6, with an Amendment" HR 6, Renewable Fuels, Consumer Protection, and Energy Efficiency Act of 2007 title reads:

The bill increases the Renewable Fuels Standard to 36 billion gallons of ethanol and other biofuels by 2022. Under increased CAFE standards, automakers will be required to increase the average fuel economy of cars and trucks to 35 miles per gallon by 2020.

There's a Reason Things Move Slower in Washington

Big Oil Cartoon

No words appear to be truer. There's a battle in Congress for an energy bill that will reduce American dependence upon foreign oil, improve air quality and spur technology development and the economy. And there's still time to let your representatives and senators know that you want a bill passed that the president can sign before the end of the year.

But the opposition is fierce and determined to keep things the status quo. So just what does American Petroleum Institute have to say about this energy legislation?
"At a time of tight supply and demand, the legislation would do absolutely nothing to bring to the marketplace one more gallon of gasoline or diesel or one more cubic foot of natural gas." - API President Red Cavaney (pdf)
Yep. There's a reason why things are moving slower.

But we can move faster and let our elected officials know we want renewable fuels, cleaner air, and energy security.

Transportation Costs Tough on Dairy and Pork Producers

The main stream media is often quick to pounce on sensational headlines but rarely looks a little deeper at the details behind them. Oh, there'll be a pundit or two. Rarely do they get the facts from real people in the field. That's been painfully true over the food and fuel debate this past year.

Farm and Ranch Guide published an article covering the recent joint 2007 North Dakota Dairy and Pork Producers Convention. The entire article is worth reading for more details.

But we found a few key comments from active producers and industry experts worth mentioning because they show in stark contrast what's been missing from the media concerning the drivers of food costs:
"He said one of the biggest issues in the dairy business is transportation. Taking the milk out and bringing products in are becoming increasingly expensive with the escalating fuel costs."
Also J.W. Schroeder, NDSU Extension dairy specialist, stated that transportation was one of the biggest issues in the dairy industry today.
"Schroeder said transportation costs average 78 cents per hundredweight, the highest in the marketing region and 28 cents above the average for seven other Midwestern states."
So the next time you read an article that lays all food cost increases at the feet of hard-working American farmers, you can bet they didn't talk to anyone who knows what's really going on.
